Cold-weather skiing: ideal conditions to uncover with proper preparation!

Cold-weather skiing: ideal conditions to uncover with proper preparation!

Here’s why you should still strap on your skis when temperatures drop and how to prepare properly to make the most of your day on the slopes.

Amazing conditions in colder weather

In cold weather, snow crystallization reaches its peak. At Owl’s Head, grooming operations take place mainly between 4 p.m. and midnight, allowing the snow to set evenly overnight and deliver ideal conditions throughout the day.

When temperatures remain low, snow quality stays excellent for longer, offering near-perfect conditions from first tracks to the last lift.

Cold temperatures are also a key ally in snowmaking. They allow for the production of drier, lighter snow while maximizing both the quantity and quality of output. The blend of machine-made and natural snow creates optimal conditions for an exceptional skiing experience.

More time on the trails

Cold weather attracts only the most passionate skiers, which naturally reduces crowds on the slopes. The result? Faster access to the lifts and more runs in your day. Less waiting, more flow — the perfect opportunity to refine your turns and explore the mountain in a calm, uncrowded setting.

How to best prepare yourself

To fully enjoy a day of skiing in consistently cold winter temperatures, proper preparation is essential.

  • Dress in layers : Follow the three-layer system. Start with a base layer to wick away moisture, add an insulating layer to retain heat, and finish with a waterproof outer layer to protect against wind and snow.

  • Protect your extremities : Wear well-insulated gloves or mittens, thermal socks, and a thin beanie under your helmet. Don’t forget a neck warmer or balaclava to shield your face from the cold. Be sure to regularly check exposed areas to prevent frostbite.

  • Take regular breaks : After a few runs, step indoors to warm up and enjoy a hot chocolate in one of the mountain’s cozy spaces. These breaks help recharge your energy and extend the fun on the slopes.

Breathtaking panoramas

Located in the heart of Québec’s Eastern Townships, Owl’s Head is renowned for its spectacular scenery. On cold, sunny days, the mountain reveals its full beauty. From the snow-covered summit, take in breathtaking views of the valleys, surrounding peaks, and majestic Lake Memphremagog at the base of the resort.

So, see you on the slopes soon?
