First visit

It is often said that our mountain is the best-kept secret in the Eastern Townships. That’s primarily because once people discover it, they want to keep it all to themselves. Every day offers a different quality of light. Every run toward the lake below is a fresh dose of pleasure. You’re at Owl’s Head, the get-away-from-it-all spot closest to home.

First skiing visit

New to skiing and not sure how your first day will unfold? Don’t worry, you won’t be left to your own devices! Owl’s Head is there to guide you. Winter’s top sports – alpine skiing and snowboarding – are both physical and psychological in nature. Along with being excellent muscular and cardiovascular workouts, they also confer all of the sensations and mental benefits of outdoor activity. To get the most of out either sport the first time, though, here are a few useful tips.

The right apparel

Ideally, opt for several layers of clothing so that you can adapt to changing climatic conditions: choose warm, waterproof, breathable garments that aren’t constricting – think ease of movement.

Don’t forget to protect the extremities: the nose, ears, fingers and even the toes with good thick socks made of synthetic fibres.
Pack more than you’ll need and leave your belongings in a locker in the chalet basement!

Choosing the right equipment

Your choice of equipment will be essential. There is a mind-boggling array of skis and snowboards out there; you must choose length and model based on your height, physical aptitudes, skill level and snow sport style you’re interested in.
Visit our Wax Ski Shop or rental centre, where experts will recommend the equipment that’s right for you and your budget.

Warming up is crucial

Skiing and snowboarding are fairly demanding sports. Pro tip: warm up before tackling your first run, and test your movements. There are also different levels of difficulty. First, take the time to familiarize yourself with the runs marked “Beginners.” You can choose from more than 15 of them! Remember, this isn’t a competition. Have fun!

The reloadable card

The ECHO card is a RFID chip that you can use to load all day tickets purchased online or at the Owl’s Head ticket counter. The NINOXE card is a RFID smart card you can use to load all limited and unlimited season passes purchased online or at the Owl’s Head customer service centre. Both reloadable, non-cash-redeemable and non-transferrable cards will give you access to various activities at the mountain.

Why not take a lesson?

Alpine skiing and snowboarding are both technical sports, and as such we recommend taking a class with experienced instructors who will teach you basic techniques and appropriate learning tips. Investing in a skiing or boarding lesson is a smart choice for the first-timer who wants to enjoy the experience. You’ll start off with good foundations and improve more quickly.

If you’ve never skied or boarded, the Back to the slopes programs are ideal for making your first experience with a snow sport a fun and enjoyable one.

This package includes a one-hour lesson with a qualified instructor who will teach you the rudiments, the necessary skiing or boarding equipment rental (skis, boots and poles or board and boots), and a lift ticket.
