The mountain

An amazing panoramic view of Lake Memphremagog and the area

Imagine skiing on freshly groomed runs day after day. Spend the morning on the trails for all levels. Then rest and refuel in our revamped chalet while enjoying the regional cuisine at our restaurant before hitting the slopes again in the afternoon. When it’s time to call it a day, sit back and contemplate the stunning sunset. Breathe. Here and now.

At Owl’s Head, the experience is not limited to skiing. The resort offers a diversified array of all-season activities.

MORE THAN 50 YEARS OF A RICH HISTORY

Owl’s Head Mountain is steeped in history and has been a cherished landmark for residents of the Eastern Townships for centuries.
About 50 years ago, a young couple living in the area decided to jump into an adventure, opening the ski hill that has become the resort we know today. Legions of area folks learned to ski here and passed along their passion to children and grandchildren. Destination Owl’s Head took up the torch in 2018 and now plans to enhance the resort while showcasing its unique character.

1965

Fred Korman opened Ski Owl’s Head for business. With his wife Lillian and their daughter Caroll, Mr. Korman ran the ski hill’s debut season with two double chairlifts and one tow bar. Back then, visitors had the choice of six trails designed by Olympic skier Bob Richardson. What had started as a hobby business for the Mansonville electrician quickly turned into a four-season destination. Thanks to the vision of Fred and Liliian Korman, the centre continued to grow, year after year, along with development of the land and improvements to facilities and equipment.

1970

The Owl’s Head Ski School was founded by Bob Richardson, Canadian Olympic champion.

1981

This season proved to be difficult due to very light snowfall. Anxious not to disappoint his customers again, Mr. Korman purchased his first artificial snow machine a few years later.

1986

Construction began on the 18-hole golf course. It was officially inaugurated in 1992.

1995

The Owl’s Head team set up the facilities and structure for adapted skiing.

2011

The skiers’ playground was expanded with off-piste and glade runs.

2018

The new owners of Destination Owl’s Head took up the torch with a mission to continue to optimize the site’s unique potential.

LILIAN AND FRED KORMAN TELL THEIR STORY

A family business

50 years ago, we went into this venture with no idea of what was to come. Since starting the ski hill we’ve seen generations of clients come and go. We’ve always been so pleased to see people who visited here as children come back years later with their own families. From our office window, we could watch the ski lessons in progress each year – a testament to your love and enjoyment in discovering the joys of winter. Our greatest satisfaction has been the strong bonds we have with you. It’s thanks to you that Owl’s Head has continued to grow while preserving its warm and friendly atmosphere.

WHERE DOES THE OWL’S HEAD NAME ORIGINATE?

Many people believe the name “Owl’s Head” comes from the outline of the mountain summit, which they say resembles an owl’s head. In fact, the name originated with the native people, the Abenaki nation, who lived in the area and were hunters and fishers. When their chief, whose name was OWL, died, they decided to commemorate his life to ensure that his spirit would live on forever; and so they named the mountain Owl’s Head. To them, the contour of the mountain looked like their chief’s profile as he rested in death.
